AOPharma Ltd. (Advanced Ophthalmic Pharma) is a biomedical company, a pioneer in the development of innovative technologies in ophthalmology. Its first product - the Eye AdMister™ - enables a user-friendly mist application of preservative-free ophthalmic drug formulations in a cost effective manner. This delivery device serves as a platform that may employ treatments for the vast majority of eye diseases currently treated with traditional eye drops.

Improvement in administering eye drops is important for increasing patient compliance and safety as well as for improved drug bioavailability (enhanced absorption). Additionally, preservatives such as BAK, included in most multi-dose formulations, may pose toxic side effects if taken over long periods of time, hence the advantage of non-preserved drug formulations.

The company was born out of the need to improve the way eye diseases are treated with topical medication, i.e. eye drops. Managing the delivery of an eye drop from a bottle or a dropper on to the ocular surface is not simple to anyone, but especially difficult for the elderly and children who are the main users. Additionally, only a fraction of the amount delivered in a drop is in fact needed, the rest being spilled out to the cheek at the best, or promptly absorbed into the blood system via the naso-lacrimal duct, with the subsequent systemic side effects - at worst.  Furthermore, chronic use of eye drops poses toxic effects due to the preservatives used in almost all of the currently available ophthalmic products.

The introduction of a simple, easy to use, novel container to provide one solution to all the above-mentioned problems was the basis for the foundation of AOPharma.

The Eye AdMister™ has undergone successful evaluation in human subjects at the Department of Ophthalmology, TAMC (Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel) to validate its innovative drug-delivery system and concept of disease treatment with mist administration. AOPharma intends to collaborate using its technological platform with pharmaceutical companies in ophthalmology interested in product differentiation, corporate branding, increased compliance, improving their products' delivery as well as enhancing their products' life cycle management through reformulation.
